Details: Hello,
My name is Hailey Rueden, I am a research associate, working with Drs. Dennis Reidy (https://publichealth.gsu.edu/profile/dennis-reidy/) in the School of Public Health at Georgia State University. We are conducting research to better understand the role of alcohol in alleged sexual assaults among young adults. A large body of evidence suggests that 60% - 90% of sexual assaults are never reported to authorities. However, there exists a belief among many members of the public (and law enforcement) that false accusations of sexual assault are common. Establishing the legitimacy of assault claims is complicated by the fact the majority of alleged sexual assaults involve the consumption of alcohol by one or both involved parties. The involvement of alcohol can lead to ambiguity in social interactions, uncertainty about whether assault occurred, retroactive determinations of consent, and “mistake of fact” as to the existence of consent by both parties. Our purpose in conducting this research is to determine how common these ambiguous sexual interactions are among young adults and what factors contribute to them being labeled as assault vs. consensual.
As a part of this research, we are collecting survey data from a sample of men and women throughout the United States. To do so, we are requesting access to email registries for students from colleges and universities. Therefore, we would like to inquire as to the steps we need to initiate to obtain such information from your institution. If perhaps, there is someone else at your institution that is more suited to address this request, could you provide there contact information or kindly forward me to the appropriate point of contact? Any assistance you can provide is greatly beneficial and appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your time, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at ----- or Dr. Dennis Reidy directly at dreidy@gsu.edu.
